I believe that Darth Maul was very under used in Star Wars Episode 1. I mean he was in the movie for around maybe 15 minutes and he was one of the coolest characters.

Maul looked so cool because he had all the good moves. He brought light saber battles to new heights. He became a favorite of certain female Star Wars fans who found him quite hot and attractive. I knew someone once who loved to dress up like him. She even took kung fu lessons to move like him. No, Dooku is not the same.

Dooku may have been rather older, as well as potentially less agile, however his knowledge of the force far exceeded that of Maul.
If the two had ever faced eachother in combat, i am almost certain Dooku would have emerged victorius

I disagree I think Mauls youth and amazing skill with a lightsaber (something Dooku lacked) would prove stronger than dooku's knowledge of the force.

Maul was good at the martial arts. I liked Dooku better than Maul because he had more Sith abilities. I do not believe in hateing someone for being to old or to young. Dooku is also a more sufistacated charector with more dept. Dooku compairs to another charector played by Christepher Lee, Fransisco Scarramander, The Man With the Golden Gun.

Darth Maul was the most highly trained sith in the order, and Darth Sidious raised him in the ways of the Sith. If you guys read graphic novels from star wars you would know that he could have with stand the sith lighting. However, Dooku/Tyranus is a strategist, as well far experience as Maul. But I agree Lord Maul could have been used for the second installment of the prequel.

Born 57 BBY, Darth Maul was an apprentice to Darth Sidious. A Zabrak originally from Iridonia, Maul had no memories of his homeworld or family, having been kidnapped as an infant by Sidious.
Indoctrinated in the ways of the Dark Side of the Force from youth, Maul had no emotion aside from bloodlust and rage. During his training, any show of fear was severely punished by Sidious, any hint of mercy rewarded with cruelty. By the time Maul was an adolescent, his master had already constructed him into a weapon of pure hatred.
The ultimate test came when Maul was abandoned by his master on an isolated Outer Rim world, forced to survive alone while being hunted by hordes of assassin droids. After a month's time, Sidious returned and challenged his apprentice to a duel, one which Maul lost. Sidious then told Maul that he had been secretly training another apprentice to replace him. Rage and hatred overwhelmed Maul, and in one final act of defiance he nearly killed his master. When Maul's emotions were finally spent, he prepared himself for death, yet Sidious laughed instead. By wanting to kill his own master, Maul had in fact passed the final test. Sidious proclaimed him Darth Maul and took him to a new home on Coruscant.
Maul was skilled with the lightsaber, trained by Sidious to be a master of Form VII which draws on emotions and the dark side. Unlike the traditional dueling techniques of most Jedi, Maul combined his swordsmanship with incredible acrobatic and martial arts hand-to-hand combat skills, making him a nearly unstoppable dervish of destruction. When fighting multiple opponents, Maul extended the second blade of his double-bladed lightsaber forming a saberstaff, doubling his lethality. Maul often used this to catch opponents by surprise, as few were prepared for the extra blade. Maul has based his lightsaber design upon Exar Kun's. Maul is a master of the fighting style Teräs Käsi.
Darth Maul was also skilled with combining Force talents with mechanics. Sidious gave Maul the funds and schematics he needed, and provided Maul with a secret facility on Coruscant in which to work. There Maul constructed his signature speeder bike Bloodfin and the Dark Eye seeker droids. Sidious also gave Maul a powerful transport - The Sith Infiltrator - which hosted a cloaking shield generator. This vehicle vas developed by Raith Sinear- The man who's company would later develop the TIE fighter for the Empire.
Maul originally went on countless missions of terror for his master, killing politicians, crime bosses, merchants, and warlords. Maul's very appearance had been carefully conceived to put fear into the heart of the Sith's enemies and unwitting allies. Yet despite his untold successess, Maul longed for victory over Jedi.
During the events of Episode I: the Phantom Menace, Maul was sent to capture Queen Amidala, and eliminate the Jedi who had been dispatched by the Republic to settle the conflict. Maul barely failed in this task on Tatooine, and he thirsted for revenge. Fighting Sand People and Togorian pirates put a drain on him by the time he left Tatooine. In a vicious duel during the Battle of Naboo, Maul succeeded in slaying Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, one of the best swordfighters in the galaxy. However, overconfidence -- a common personality trait among the zabrak race -- with a bit of pure bad luck led to Maul's immediate downfall when he was sliced in half by Jinn's apprentice, the young Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Darth Maul first appeared in the film The Phantom Menace, but to the dissapointment of many fans, his character was quickly killed by the end of the film. Maul's striking visual design, in addition to his limited role on film, have left many fans wanting to know more about his character.
Maul's earlier escapades are documented in the following works: Jedi Council: Acts of War (comic book miniseries), Darth Maul: Saboteur (ebook), Darth Maul (comic book miniseries), Episode I Journal: Darth Maul (novella), Episode I Adventures: The Fury of Darth Maul (novel) and Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter (novel).
Darth Maul was adopted in by Darth Sidious when he was really young. Unlike Sidious' later apprentices, Tyranus and Vader, Maul had no ambition to strike down his master and take his place as the Sith Master.
In Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter, which takes place shortly before The Phantom Menace Maul hunts down a rogue Neimoidian who tries to sell information about the upcoming invasion of Naboo to the Republic.
In a story that takes place most likely outside of the normal Star Wars canon in Star Wars: Visionaries, Maul survives his fall during the Battle of Naboo. He gains prosthetic metal legs. Without Palpatine's knowledge, he tracks down Obi-Wan Kenobi accross several planets including Kamino, Geonosis, Polis Massa, and eventually Tatooine. He kills Watto before finding out about the Lars homestead. He discovers Anakin Skywalker's child before being killed by Obi-Wan and Owen Lars.

I myself have not had the time to read too many Star Wars books, but I remember reading a Darth Maul Journal where he describes his training. Do you happen to know about the life of Darth Sideous/Palpatine when he was young? What is known about his master Darth Plageous? What was Palpatine's first name?

Once an ambitious Senator in the Galactic Senate, the blockade of his homeworld, Naboo, saw him become Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. He led the Republic during the Clone Wars, later declaring himself Galactic Emperor. Ultimately, Palpatine was revealed to be Darth Sidious, a Sith Lord of immense power and immeasurable cunning.

Like Yoda, many details regarding Palpatine's character have not been revealed so as to make him an enigmatic character. Few details of Palpatine's early life are known, though he was presumably born on the peaceful backwater planet of Naboo in circa 84 BBY. As an adult, Palpatine ran for political office numerous times, suffering an early string of defeats. In 52 BBY, however, he was elected sectorial senator for the Naboo system.
Originally regarded as somewhat unambitious and unassuming by his peers, Senator Palpatine surprised everyone as he became increasingly popular, cultivating friendships with respected public figures, military commanders, and even Jedi Masters. Palpatine wrote extensively, his notes on power becoming popular texts among political and military science students, his theories even taught at leading universities throughout the galaxy. Despite this growing influence, Palpatine shunned publicity, and would spend many hours alone reflecting in his modest quarters.
Palpatine was a political genius with a cunning understanding of the human mind, becoming a trusted and beloved Senator in the Galactic Senate, a good and modest man by reputation. In addition to broad expertise in areas such as psychology, bureaucracy, and philosophy, he had the ability to foresee countless possible futures so that he could manipulate events as a grandmaster moves pieces on a dejarik board.

While it is unknown when he first turned to the dark side of the Force, it is known that his Sith Master was Darth Plagueis. Plagueis reputedly was capable of manipulating midi-chlorians to create life and avert death. Sidious murdered his master in his sleep, but not before he claimed he had learned Plagueis's power. A self-proclaimed savior, Darth Sidious would go on to accomplish (for a time) the ultimate goals of his shadowy order: the (almost) complete destruction of the Jedi Order and the domination of the galaxy.
Sidious began training an apprentice, Darth Maul, sometime before 52 BBY. Maul was a Zabrak kidnapped from Iridonia as an infant, then trained in the ways of the Sith and all forms of combat; he was especially taught aggression, anger, and boiling hatred toward the Jedi. Even though much effort went into perfecting Maul into an ultimate Jedi-killing weapon, he was merely a pawn in Sidious' grand strategy.
Palpatine used Maul to assassinate early political enemies, gaining him influence, especially in illicit circles. This eventually led to a secret alliance with the Trade Federation, a consortium which controlled shipping throughout the backwaters of the galaxy, that was large and powerful enough to be granted full representation in the Senate along with representation of its smaller customer systems. (This political clout was one of the Trade Federation's methods of forcing its backwater customers to remain loyal, since they could threaten to withdraw Federation representation of the system in the Republic Senate.)

At Senator Palpatine's manipulation, the Galactic Senate had voted to levy taxes on trade in order to raise funds for the government. Palpatine, in his role as Sidious, persuaded the Trade Federation to blockade Naboo in protest. He assured them that the blockade would bring them greater control and profits, as the Senate would be impotent to act. Meanwhile, in his role as Palpatine, he convinced Queen Amidala of Naboo to endure the blockade; he advised her that the Trade Federation could not force the issue, and that the Senate wouldn't let the dispute continue for long. This led to the events opening The Phantom Menace.
Palpatine then persuaded Chancellor Finis Valorum to request the Jedi Council's assistance in mediating the dispute on Naboo and the council in turn dispatched Obi-Wan Kenobi and his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. The Jedi attempted to meet with Nute Gunray, viceroy of the Federation, aboard his flagship. When it seemed the Trade Federation would be forced to end the blockade, Sidious ordered them to kill the Jedi and invade Naboo instead. He assured them that it would be over before the Senate could respond; that he would keep it occupied with other matters. Sidious's apparent goals were to weaken the power of the Trade Federation (one of the key galactic forces at the time), and to gain sympathy due to the invasion of his homeworld.
The Jedi escaped to the planet below; but once there, found themselves far too outnumbered to deal with the newly ordered invasion themselves. They were left with little choice but to run the blockade, and to relay news of the invasion to the Galactic Senate where they would be able to elicit aid. However, their ship was damaged in the escape, and the Jedi were forced to land to make repairs.
Palpatine would have known that the Jedi would be unwilling to use a Federation-controlled planet during a time of active hostility; and it is believed by some that for this reason, Palpatine had helped the Federation expand their control of trade in the galaxy, up to the borders of Hutt space. Here the Jedi would feel safe that the Federation would not dare follow. And here, within Hutt territory, was the nearest non-Federation controlled planet, Tatooine. On Tatooine, Jinn would find the young slave Anakin Skywalker and discover his extraordinary connection to the Force. Believing the young boy to be the "Chosen One" who, according to an ancient Jedi prophecy, would destroy the Sith and restore balance to the Force, Jinn would bring him to be trained as a Jedi.
As Palpatine intended, the Jedi brought Queen Amidala to the Republic capital of Coruscant. There she testified to what the Federation had done and pleaded for help. Her reputation and testimony were enough to convince the Senate to take action. However, Valorum, under pressure from the Federation, was unwilling to act and the Queen, at Palpatine's suggestion, asked for a vote of no confidence. The Senate agreed and Valorum was ousted from office.
The sympathy for Naboo concerning the ordeal was enough to earn the already well-respected Palpatine a nomination to be Valorum's successor. His secret alliances further assured that he would be the one elected. Queen Amidala returned with the Jedi to Naboo where she led the battle to reclaim the planet from the Trade Federation. The Federation was ultimately defeated and ruined

Quick Note/ warning You could easily have fitted all that into a couple, maybe 3 - 4 posts at an absolute most. do notdo this again, posting so much, so close together, no matter what the content is spam.
Also, while it was in its own way interesting and informative, a thread asking people's opinion of a particular character does not require posting their entire biography, especially considering that such is available on the main site, and if, after you read through what is available there, you are welcome to email me to suggest additions and/or corrections.

I too would like to know Palpatine's first name as well as the rest of Empress Palpatines other questions. I also would like to know the name of the book written about Palpatine that talks about his patriotism and his stint in the navy. Only heard through the grape vine about this book so I do not have a name of the book.

this thread was meant as a discussion about Darth Maul. Not palpatine, not plagueis, nor any other. keep on topic or lose the thread.
I noticed a few discrepancies in the Maul info you posted: Darth Maul was the most highly trained sith in the order What sith order? most highly trained? There were only two., and Maul was an apprentice, as such he could not have been the most highly trained one in the apparent order... and technically as it only contained two, it was not an order, it was just referred as such to maintain tradition, nothing more.
